Transitioning to Clean Beauty

Self-care equals success. You’re going to be more successful if you take care of yourself and you’re healthy. — Beth Behrs

It's been a transformative few months on my end, and today, I'm excited to share a significant shift in my beauty routine that's been brewing for a while now. If you've been following along, you know I'm all about embracing a balanced yet holistic approach to wellness, from what I put into my body to what I surround myself with in my home. Several months ago, I started to see several ladies that I follow online share their own journeys with transitioning to cleaner beauty products and naturally, I was intrigued.

As someone deeply invested in leading a mindful, curated, and intentional life, being conscious of the ingredients in the products I use and eat is very important to me. While diet has always been exceptionally important to me, it was when we got our first dog, Otto, at the beginning of 2020 that I started a deep-dive into research about what common household products can be harmful to our pets. Only the best for our fur babies, right?! I was equally shocked and saddened to learn that so many products I was using (and loving) weren’t the best products for my dog’s health, and so I started making switches to cleaner, non-toxic, products that were (generally speaking) more environmentally friendly.

From food to household cleaners, I've made a concerted effort to opt for natural, eco-friendly options whenever possible. But one area that hadn't received as much scrutiny until recently was my makeup bag.

Cue the lightbulb moment: If I'm meticulous about what I eat and the products I use at home, why should my skincare and makeup be any different? With this realization, I embarked on a journey of discovery, delving into the often murky world of beauty product ingredients. What I found was eye-opening, to say the least. Did you know that many conventional beauty products contain a laundry list of potentially harmful chemicals? From parabens and phthalates to formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, it's astounding how many questionable ingredients can be found lurking in our favorite makeup products.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a scientist, and certainly not an expert in chemistry or any similar field of study… I am not telling, but merely sharing my own personal experience here.

Armed with this knowledge, I began to scrutinize the labels of my beloved beauty staples, and let me tell you, it was a wake-up call. But here's the thing: Knowledge is power. And armed with the understanding of what I was putting on my skin (and knowing that our skin is soaking up so much of what we expose it to), I knew I had to make a change. Enter clean beauty.

Clean beauty isn't just a buzzword; it's really been a movement, of sorts, at least within the online communities that I follow—one that prioritizes transparency, sustainability, and, most importantly, safety. Clean beauty is about opting for products formulated with natural, non-toxic ingredients that nourish and support your skin.

Making the switch wasn't easy, and I am certainly going into this new journey with balance in mind. Day-to-day, you’ll definitely find me reaching for clean beauty products; however, I still have some of my favorite beauty products saved for special occasions.

Full disclosure: I truthfully haven’t seen any difference in my skin — good or bad. I still have the occasional pimple, and I still have combination skin. But, this journey has been a positive personal step in aligning my beauty routine with my broader ethos of self-care. Just as I nourish my body with wholesome foods and focus on using safe, eco-friendly cleaning and home fragrance products in my home, I'm now extending that same level of care to my skin. If you’ve made the transition to clean beauty, I would love to know your favorite products in the comments down below!
