A Guide to Dressing for the Seasons in Virginia
Each season brings something new to our lives - a chance to explore and discover. - Anonymous
As a Virginia native, one question I often field from friends and family visiting the state is, "What should I wear?" I have several other style guides worth checking out on this blog for inspiration about nailing the ‘hunt country chic’ aesthetic; however, I haven’t focused much yet on practical dressing as it relates to the lovely seasonal weather that Virginia offers us. My mom is one of the most prepared ladies I know, and so naturally, I receive the “What should I wear?” question from her every time she graces this lovely state with a visit. Being much the same as my mom and always wanting to be as prepared as possible, I've realized it’s time to compile my definitive guide to dressing for success in each of Virginia’s seasons.
Dressing for Spring
Layering: With temperatures fluctuating throughout the day, layering is key for staying comfortable. Start with a lightweight base and add on as needed — for a day out, I recommend a lightweight cashmere sweater, topped with a blazer or jacket. Then, add a wool coat on top and accessorize with a weighty, comfortable scarf for extra warmth.
Good Quality Raincoat: Spring showers are a common occurrence in Virginia, so investing in a durable raincoat will keep you dry without sacrificing style. While we don’t get the heavy amounts of rain that, say, the Pacific Northwest does, we do seem to have many scattered showers, and there is nothing worse than dressing for sun, only to be surprised when you’re out and about without your raincoat in hand!
Dressing for Summer
Natural, Breezy Fabrics: Opt for breathable materials like linen, silk, and lightweight cotton to beat the heat and humidity. Natural fabrics breathe so much better than synthetic materials, making them a necessary investment for comfortable summer style.
Light Colors: Choose light-colored clothing that won't absorb the sun's heat, keeping you cooler during the scorching summer days. Plus, is there anything better than a white, flowy dress on a summer afternoon?
Sleeveless Options: Embrace sleeveless tops and dresses to stay cool while exploring Virginia's outdoor attractions. There is nothing worse than trying to enjoy a beautiful view and a glass of local sparkling wine at a winery with sweaty arms!
Comfortable Shoes: Select comfortable, well-fitting shoes to avoid blisters when the weather turns balmy. With Virginia’s humidity, any amount of walking can result in days of discomfort if your shoes rub against your feet.
Dressing for Fall
Layering (Again!): As temperatures begin to dip, bring back the layers to adapt to Virginia's transitional weather.
Wool Trench or Pea Coat: Invest in a timeless tan wool trench or classic pea coat to stay warm and stylish during crisp fall days.
Riding Boots: A staple in any Virginian's wardrobe, riding boots effortlessly pair with light dresses for warmer fall days and add a touch of sophistication to cooler evenings.
Dressing for Winter
Natural Wintry Fabrics: Keep cozy with essential winter fabrics like wool and cashmere, providing both warmth and style. There is nothing quite like a good book, a hot cup of tea, and a cozy knit, am I right?
Boots with Leggings or Tights: Pair boots with either leggings or tights for added warmth and versatility during Virginia's chilly winters. And, don’t forget your cashmere socks! They are thin so that won’t make fitting into your boots difficult, and yet they are so warm and breathable — warm toes are crucial for enjoying colder days out in hunt country!
Scarves and Gloves: Don't forget to accessorize with scarves and gloves to protect against the biting winter winds. During the cold, winter months, I make sure to always keep an extra pair of gloves in my handbag so that I am never caught with cold fingers. These cashmere-lined leather gloves from Fairfax and Favor are my favorite!
Warm, Comfortable Boots: Be prepared for wet and snowy days with a pair of durable field or snow boots, ensuring your feet stay warm and dry as you explore Virginia's winter wonderland.
With these key components for each season, you'll be ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws your way while exploring all that Virginia has to offer.
