Four Tips for Preparing Your Wardrobe for Fall

Life starts over again when it gets crisp in the fall. - F. Scott Fitzgerald

As the vibrant hues of summer start to give way to the warm and earthy tones of autumn, it's time to bid farewell to your favorite sundresses and shorts and say hello to cozy sweaters and classic riding boots. The transition from summer to fall not only brings a change in the weather but also a shift in your style choices. To help you navigate this seasonal switch with ease and ensure your wardrobe is ready for the cooler days ahead, I've put together four essential tips that I use each season to aide me in preparing my wardrobe for the season ahead.

Polish Your Boots

Early September is the perfect time to pop on a movie and spend an hour polishing all of your leather boots for the season ahead. If you like suede, I’d also take this time to treat your suede with a water-proof treatment or other protection. Along with your boots, make sure to check for any scuffs or marks on your other leather goods, such as belts and handbags. That way when the weather is cool enough to pop on that first pair of classic riding boots, they’ll be clean and polished.

Switch Out What’s On Your Hangers and Shoe Racks

I find it so motivating and inspiring to do a deep clean and re-organize of my closet every season. When it comes time for fall, that means that I’ll be hanging up my white dresses, short-sleeved blouses, and lighter skirts to make room for my cozy knits, coats and jackets, and warmer layering pieces. I also like to switch up the handbags I have displayed for quick access, and will pack up my sandals to make room for my loafers, flats, and boots. Re-organizing the layout of your closet also gives you the perfect opportunity to inspire yourself with a new color palette to suit the cooler temperatures and warmer fall color palette.

Dry-Clean Your Coats and Jackets

If you didn’t dry-clean your coats and jackets before the temperature heated up for spring and summer, now is the perfect time to give your wool coats and lighter jackets a deep clean and refresh.

Out with the Old, In with the New

At the beginning of each season, I like to rehang all of my clothing so that the hangers’ hooks opposite of me (instead of the C-part of the hook wrapped around the outside of the clothing rail, it’s on the opposite side facing away from me). Throughout the weeks and months that follow, I will swap the orientation of the hanger whenever I wear the piece that’s hanging on it. At the end of the season, I then take an assessment of what I have worn and what I haven’t worn based on which hangers haven’t been switched around. It’s the perfect indicator to me that it may be time to donate the untouched pieces to make room for new seasonal clothing items.
