A Visit to Middleburg

There’s a whole world out there, right outside your window. You’d be a fool to miss it. - Charlotte Eriksson

Set in the heart of the nation’s wine and hunt country is the charming, history-rich town of Middleburg, Virginia. In fact, Middleburg is where is first sourced my inspiration for starting this blog. There is something uniquely charming about Middleburg that reminds me so much of England’s Cotswolds. Having followed many bloggers over the past ten years who live around the Cotswolds, I often find myself wishing I wasn’t so far away from the beautiful scenery I saw on Youtube and Instagram. Well, until I discovered Middleburg.

While everything Middleburg has to offer is worth checking out, I’ve gathered up a few of my favorite places in and around the town which I highly recommend checking out.

To Eat:

King Street Oyster Bar

This place is one of the most popular destinations on Washington Street, and for good reason! With great cocktails, a lively atmosphere, and delicious seafood, King Street Oyster Bar has so much to offer. If you are partial to oysters, you can’t go wrong with their raw bar. I also recommend checking out their tuna tacos and ceviche to start. If you’re on the hungrier side, you can’t go wrong with a lobster roll or jumbo lump crabcake sandwich.

Address: 1 East Washington Street

Tremolo Bar

While a relatively new addition to Washington Street, Tremolo Bar is perhaps the trendiest (and most delicious) spot in town for a sublime glass of wine and small bites. Tremolo promises its guests unpretentious but delicious food, and you truly cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, in my humble opinion. The offerings change frequently, keeping things fresh and fun. If you’re unsure on what to order, just ask - the service is impeccable!

Address: 19 East Washington Street

Goodstone Inn & Restaurant

My fiancé and I wrapped up our engagement photoshoot at the Conservatory at Goodstone Inn & Restaurant, and it truly was the cherry on top of an already perfect day! We started with cocktails at The Carriage House Bar (champagne for me, please!). We had the Chef’s Tasting, and it was a phenomenal experience. The menu and ambience is perfectly curated, with every dish more exquisite and unique that the last. If you’re looking for a Michelin-star experience, this is your spot! And, in case you’ve had too many drinks or a bit too much to it, this Inn also offers a lovely place to stay in the heart of hunt country.

Address: 36205 Snake Hill Road

To Stay:

Salamander Resort and Spa

An iconic and luxurious Five-Star resort, chances are that if you’ve heard of or seen Middleburg, you’ve seen Salamander Resort & Spa. Salamander offers an unparalleled experience for everyone — perhaps you fancy a day of horseback riding, or maybe a spa day followed by a sophisticated dining experience? Whatever you seek, Salamander offers it! The entire property, to include its divine Culinary Garden, offers a taste of old school wealth and luxury without being pretentious. Whether you are looking to stay or simply enjoy a Sunday brunch, Salamander will not disappoint!

Address: 500 North Pendleton

The Red Fox Inn & Tavern

Another charming location in Middleburg that offers incredible service, dining, and overnight accommodations is The Red Fox Inn & Tavern. Defined as a pillar of Middleburg, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern has served as a hunt country jewel since 1728! If you’re looking for the same luxury that has graced the likes of Jackie O’, look no further than this historic inn! Located in the very heart of Middleburg, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern puts you in walking distance to just about every spot in town. If you visit Middleburg, you simply cannot pass up a visit to this beautiful venue.

Address: 2 East Washington Street

To Shop:

Antiques

Middleburg offers a number of charming antique shops, filled with numerous treasures that capture the essence of Virginia’s hunt country… perhaps you’ll find an oil painting of a thoroughbred, or perhaps a bronze fox wine topper? The possibilities are absolutely endless! Check out the latest in Middleburg shops here.

Crème de la Crème

I could spend hours roaming around and looking at all of the pieces this charming shop has to offer! Crème de la Crème offers a perfectly curated blend of knickknacks, books, candles, jewelry, gardening goodies, and home décor.

Address: 23 E Washington Street

The Christmas Sleigh Inc.

If you’re as crazy about Christmas and German heritage as I am, you must visit The Christmas Sleigh! In addition to a plethora of beautifully handmade Christmas ornaments and nutcrackers, this charming spot also offers lovely clothing that is perfectly suited for Oktoberfest, as well as day-to-day life in hunt country. Walking into The Christmas Sleigh is like being immediately transported into a small village in the Austrian Alps, and it will surely not disappoint!

Address: 5 East Washington Street

To Drink:

Mt. Defiance Cidery and Distillery

With two locations for the lover of cider or spirits, you can’t miss Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery’s locations which hug both ends of Middleburg. The cidery produces small batches of the finest quality cider made with Virginia apples, while the distillery provides a charming, old school tasting experience for spirits and liqueurs. While there is something to offer for everyone, there is something exceptionally special about their cassis liqueur. If you give this place a visit, I insist that you try it!
